Our vision for Chemnitz
“Light our Vision” (LOV for short) is more than just a visual spectacle: It’s the expression of our shared vision for Chemnitz. It’s an impetus to rethink how we use our public spaces and an invitation to work together to shape the design of our city. It’s where people come together, experience Chemnitz in a new light and get inspired by creative ideas. The city centre will become the backdrop for experiences and visions whose impact will radiate far beyond the Festival.
The Festival focuses on the artistic reinterpretation of places that have previously received little attention. Named by the organiser Baukultur für Chemnitz e. V., Marienplatz (Mary’s Square), an undeveloped 20,000 square metre area in the heart of the city, is the focus of attention. It connects the area around the Rathaus (Town Hall) with Theaterplatz (Theatre Square) and the main station. Our vision is to revitalise this once thriving hub through architecture.
The area offers the potential to create a Bilbao Effect for Chemnitz. A grand architectural idea will see the square develop an impressive radiance, which in turn will boost the city’s international appeal.
LOV makes these visions tangible through the medium of light. Light our Vision is already transforming “non-places” into “phenomenon places”.
The first edition of the Festival of Light Art in 2023 has already had a significant impact on urban development in Chemnitz. The route between the city’s library and the Town Hall was confirmed as a future planning hub by a city council resolution. This has enabled the working group at the Architektenkammer Sachsen (Saxony Chamber of Architects) to raise objections to the published plans for Brückenstraße concerning areas we believe require improvement. The members also welcome the fact that the Niners basketball club, too, has discovered the hidden potential of Marienplatz.
About the Architektenkammer Sachsen (Saxony Chamber of Architects)
The Saxony Chamber of Architects is a chamber of the liberal professions, a public corporation, professional organisation and self-administration body for over 3,000 architects, interior designers, landscape architects and urban planners in Saxony. Its primary task is to cultivate, promote and effectively support the building industry, in particular the built environment, architecture, urban planning and landscape design sectors. In July 2021, a new “Chemnitz – Capital of Culture 2025” working group was formed under the Saxony Chamber of Architects umbrella, focusing on the impact of Chemnitz being named the European Capital of Culture. Led by Claudia Fischer, a small team of architects from Chemnitz is now collecting ideas and planning exciting projects for these celebrations in 2025. The “Light our Vision” Chemnitz Festival of Light Art is one of them.
